Rescue

I was famished and waiting for food when I started working on this a few days back. What better thing to do than to look up a writing prompt and to try to craft some quirky prose while killing time and trying to stave your hunger eh?

I'm totally out of practice and this is probably more trash than treasure, but here's to sharing the process of things and not being too concerned about perfection (something that's frankly quite hard for me to do, most of the time *sigh*).

I suppose I will refine this later on should it turn out to be fascinating enough that I can't leave it alone.

For now, I guess I'll just leave you with this tiny piece of fiction. And hope that I'll have something more compelling to offer the next round.

Enjoy (if you can heh).

Quite the Reward

Every writer needs a little inspiration once in a while. For today's prompt, your character rescues a creature that turns out to be a powerful being.

Inconvenient. That's what it was.

Bad enough that it was raining, and that Chester was running late. And now... this near-accident incident.

He ought to have just driven right on, but if he had, he'd surely punish himself to eternity for not having stopped to do something kind. After all, he had almost killed the thing.

The creature, to be more precise.

Thankfully, the timing was such that all that transpired was a slight bit of contact between it and the car.

The force was enough to have it bumped it off the road though. Which was why Chester had to care about the outcome since it was he who had caused the whole thing to transpire.

Well, at the very least, none of its limbs had been broken.

Furthermore, the landing had been a soft one: It had fallen right into a thriving lalang patch. And it was still alive and alert after all. Just immobile and in a terribly nervous/anxious state.

At a first glance, it looked like a giant, furry white rabbit. But there were things about it that would immediately leave you to conclude otherwise upon closer inspection.

Chester couldn't quite put his finger on what that was exactly, but anyway, that wasn't particularly important right now.

All he knew was that the animal needed some first aid. And it was on his conscience that he'd need to do something about that.

He applied the brakes and parked his car by the side of the road. Getting out of the car, he headed quickly in the direction of the said creature.

The rain was still ongoing. He found himself completely drenched the moment he stepped foot outside of his car. Not helpful whatsoever given the current task at hand.

It was a fairly small creature that he found lying helplessly.

Furry and fluffy all over.

White, but for a tiny streak of orange running through the middle of its underbelly.

It had claws.
(Not surprising.)

It had large teeth.
(Unexpected for a mouth so small; in fact, you might count it as being slightly alarming).

It was shivering and perhaps snarling, slightly?

"Hey," Chester tried coaxing it gently, kneeling on the muddy ground beside it. "Are you okay, little buddy?"

He extended a hand towards the animal, and it shrank back, growling briefly.

"Hmm. Okay. You're afraid, aren't you? Don't be scared, I'm not dangerous. And I'm sorry I almost ran over you too. You look like you need help. Would you like to come with me?"

Chester offered the creature a heartfelt smile, and this time extended both his arms towards it.

It flinched. Hesitated. But then relented and gingerly crept into his outstretched hands.

Scooping the creature up, Chester could not help but notice its huge, brown eyes staring at him. It cooed slightly before rubbing its chin against Chester's right thumb and promptly closing his eyes.

All the while, the rain was still falling steadily. Thunder boomed, lightning flashed in repeated succession.

He hurried back in the direction of the car. The heavy rain made it hard to see and had definitely slowed down his every move. He did his best to hurry. He would still have to deal with being late for his appointment.

Once again, lightning. But this time, it seemed targeted right at the spot he was at. There was no avoiding it.

The creature looked up at that very moment, its eyes widening, yet unafraid. Then, it squeezed its eyes tightly shut as if summoning some strength or power from within itself.

Chester couldn't quite remember clearly what happened next. But what he did feel was a sense that they both seemed to have been protected somehow while the lightning struck. The effects of its energy were felt everywhere all around them yet they remained untouched.

It was somewhat strange.

But Chester was in a hurry and didn't have time to think much of it right then. It wasn't until later, after the adrenaline of the entire day's events had simmered down, that he realised that he should have known that there was more to his little, white fluffy companion that it had let on.
